Purpose The purpose is to review the effects of employee participation (EP) in decision-making, ownership and profit on job quality, worker well-being productivity, derive policy recommendations from findings. Design/methodology/approach authors summarise results “declining labour power”, plus theoretical arguments empirical evidence for benefits EP satisfaction productivity. Findings Worker are ignored unless they contribute directly profitability. needed remedy this situation when employers have market power unions weak. result can be a rise both productivity well-being. Research limitations/implications chief issue here that there data limitations, particularly participation. Practical implications Lots encouraging examples many countries need legislative help multiply. Social It quite possible could major welfare employment. Originality/value make case public sector subsidies buyouts new cooperative start-ups, as well legislation works councils sharing.
